Liberia 2063: A Decentralized Sustainable Democratic State

My goal is to inspire all Liberians, regardless of age, background, or beliefs, to help rebuild the nation andovercome its long history of conflict and poverty.This book contends that Liberia’s progress requires systemic change. Persistent centralized governance since 1847 has led to poor management, poverty, underdevelopment, and ongoing instability. Despite rich natural resources, concentrating power in Monrovia has resulted in inadequate services and uneven development nationwide.The Liberia we want is integrated, peaceful, and prosperous—a Liberia, driven by its own citizens. The vision of Africa as a united, peaceful, and prosperous continent was conceived in Liberia. Liberia is the birthplace of the Organization of African Unity, the ancestor of today’s African Union. The OAU was conceived in Sanniquellie, in what is today Nimba County in year 1959, following a summit (from July 15 through July 19) between President Ahmed Sekou Toure of Guinea, President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, and President William V. S. Tubman of Liberia. We Liberians therefore owe it to ourselves and to our future generations to aspire to bring the vision of inclusive socioeconomic development and decentralized democratic governance into existence.
